Teaching philosophy

My teaching philosophy is very straightforward and probably something you have heard before: Just go slow and keep it simple. Every guitar player wants to play fast, but in order to play fast, one must first learn how to play slow. Seldom am I impressed by how fast someone can play if it is played poorly or incorrectly. In our fast-paced culture we have the expectation of everything being fast, including results. Unfortunately, this will ultimately be a stumbling block in your learning process until you learn to just go slow and enjoy the ride. The second piece is to keep it simple. Business coaches have been chanting this phrase for years, but it also applies to how we learn and gather new information.

I am fortunate to have studied with some incredible teachers, all of whom have left an indelible impression on how I both learn and teach. One of my greatest inspirations on the topic of music pedagogy is none other than L.A. session king and founder of MI’s Guitar Institute of Technology (GIT), Howard Roberts. I have included an article that he wrote titled, “On Learning Music”. This has been the foundation for how I teach for many years.
